Have you been looking at the poppy No. 2 pencil skirt in wool, wondering what goes with it? I loved the shade when I saw it in-person. I loved it so much I didn't even care that I couldn't think of 3 pairings and that I keep buying the wool pencil skirts, but never wear them. I do better w/the pencil skirts in the spring/summer as they don't require tights. The skirt wasn't final sale, so I have time to commit to the reality check. I probably won't and will end up keeping it for my museum. Especially after I saw these pairings with things I own:
With the Sera top (4) and the Target version of the pearl cluster necklace we all lost our ish over back in...2009? Similar pearl cluster necklaces by Kenneth Jay Lane ($120), ABS/Allen Schwartz ($95) and Baublebar (gold, $28)
With the silk French hen blouse (review)
With Old Navy's Liberty-like lightweight patterned shirt in multi ditsy. Which is similar to J Crew's Liberty shirt in Margaret Annie floral (current promo $120). I am very happy w/my ON shirt (M). The arms are fuller from the elbow down than would be in a J Crew top and what I prefer, but I often roll them up anyway. The rest of the blouse fits nicely and leaves me with no worries about how I'm looking in my 'new' body.
With the boy shirt in dots (6). Someone mentioned the dots feeling faded and the shirt flimsy. I didn't feel it was flimsy. It's lightweight, but doesn't feel too thin. The weight allows fluidity and is better for tucking than a more stiff oxford style. As far as the dots, I like that they blend in more with the chambray than stand out like... I dunno...measles comes to mind. The kind Marcia had on the Brady Bunch. Very spotty. In this case I prefer faint spots ;)
As for what shoes go with the red skirt, I would lean towards a light nude like these by Corso Como
..and a darker brown...which is also a nude... MK Michael Kors ($66.99). And of course black would work in some cases. I would lean towards brown shades in the hopes of looking taller.
Thanks for stopping by...

i adore the hen shirt and the dot shirt paired with it. and the nude heels are just gorgeous with it, too!
ReplyDeleteLaura - Everybody needs nude, right? ;) Thanks for visiting.
DeleteOOOOOO, these are great combinations. Thanks for sharing these super cute outfits!
ReplyDeleteRynetta, glad you like. Did you get the pencil in poppy?
DeleteI did, I don't think I did a review, but I grabbed it late in the season. The color is really striking!
DeleteYay! Good color for you, Rynetta :)
DeleteNice pairings. I love red with charcoal, but my favorite is red with camel and white with black shoes/belt. I like the Sera top. I might need to take another look at it!
ReplyDeleteKnitYarns - Red + charcoal and red + camel are good suggestions. Forgot about those :)
DeleteI love all of these outfits you created! I'm trying to stay away from pencil skirts because they sit in my closet too, but J.Crew is always tempting in that department.
ReplyDeletefsnonmymind - Y, JC is good about delivering nice pencil skirt options.
DeleteGorgeous Gigi! Now I want to run out and get that skirt! Thanks a lot! :)
ReplyDeleteJeannie - You would look good in the poppy skirt!
DeleteI love these posts! I wanted the poppy, but missed out. There will be something else to love soon enough. :)
ReplyDeleteinjanuity - The poppy will pop back. Or as you said, something else soon to love.
DeleteI don't like opaque tights with the pencil skirt either, so I usually reach for a pair of sheered ones. I got a LOT of use out of my burgundy pencil skirt, but not so much of the spice gold one even though when I bought them I was eyeing the gold one. Who knew. :)
ReplyDeleteVicky- I like the spicy gold pencil. Chambray shirt...rock it out!
DeleteI love all those combinations and it is one very pretty shade of red. I wish I could offer mind blowing shoe insight but I am lazy about shoes, 8 times in 10 I go nude shoe.
ReplyDeletejude musings - I'm sure there are more exciting shoe choices, but w/the bold color I'll play it safe to start. If I even wear the thing... lol
DeleteGreat outfit HOOK-UPS for that skirt! I laughed when you said your "pencil skirt museum"--I have one of those too! :)
ReplyDeleteI am so drawn to this color combo even though I also don't wear skirts very much in the winter. There was a shot of one of the coats in poppy over a black and white outfit that also made me swoon. I was hoping there would be a poppy pencil skirt in cotton this summer...
