J Crew - lady jacket in gilded tweed

J Crew's lady jacket in gilded tweed (28622, $398)  is now on sale for $279.99 online and $199.99 in-store. 70% wool, 22% nylon, 8% cashmere, 100% poly lining

Size 4 - chest = 37", waist = 35.25"
Size 6 - chest = 38, waist = 36.25"

Size 6 - I've been taking size 6 in these types of jackets for awhile now. The size 6 fits over the larger parts of my torso, but I felt it was too big overall. Best to be in different shape and go for a size 4. At least for me.

I appreciate that JC has corrected the fit a little bit on this type of silhouette. Or at least not made it as tight as the fanfare jacket. Another issue in these more cropped & fitted jackets is the sleeve. These aren't too narrow and seem more average.

If I were to close it. My hands weren't good w/the zipper that day and I couldn't get it fastened.

As you've already seen, it does not have bracelet sleeves. I'm sure some of you welcome this change.

I think the metallic could be more subtle. I like sparkle, but I didn't see it as a throw-on-with-jeans jacket for the daytime. I think the right person could wear it for whatever occasion she chose -- daytime, evening. It will all depend on your personal style and lifestyle. But that tweed is really gilded!

Like many retailers, J Crew is aiming for a young demographic. This jacket I can see on many ages. However, when I tried it on I really kept thinking how much Linda Richman would love it. She's a Mike Myer's character that he rocked on SNL. And when searching for a pic of 'her,' I found a picture of an actress (?) channeling the character for her theatre/comedy/cabaret? show. In a gold jacket, to boot.

The Feeling
I like the gold metallic fabric, although it is a bit...metallic-y. The word gaudy does come to mind. Maybe flashy is a bit more accurate. I like the pockets and the idea of the zip as a change from buttons. Something about the top of it seems very plain. I don't think it should've had a collar and it doesn't need fringe. It could've benefitted from one or two small chest pockets to add more interest. I like that the fit is a little more generous than other lady day jackets. I'm inclined to say take the smaller of your two JC sizes if you vacillate between. Check cs for measurements to be sure.

The matching collection mini in gilded tweed (36126, $158) is currently both $99.99 in-store and online.

  1. I agree that it is very sparkly. I like gold but it looks too holida-y to be a everyday jacket IMO (even on the right person). I have the safari tweed one and the sparkle is much more subtle. It was more cropped (I think) and more overall young-looking (instead of regular pockets it had zip pocket on the chest, not exposed). But maybe if I didn't have that one I would like this one better.

    1. Ema - One person I think could pull it off and not look holiday is Mom's A Fashion Dork. She wears this type of jacket well w/jeans. I have enough of these jackets & not really wearing them with my little one in tow, so I'm happy to pass on it :)

  2. Hm. I'm glad you posted this. I don't think I could pull off so much shine, and was on the fence about ordering it.

    1. Elizabeth - Glad the review helped. Some things I feel are universal, but this one will totally work for some and not others.

  3. thanks for the review!!! ive never tried on this jacket before but wear a 6 in the schoolboy blazer & prefer my jackets a bit more fitted. based on this & your review, would you suggest the 6 or the 4?

    1. A - I'm inclined to say go with the 4. Here are the measurements so you can be sure:

      Size 4 - chest = 37", waist = 35.25"

      Size 6 - chest = 38, waist = 36.25"

  4. Wow, I'm not feeling it at all. While I liked your first photo-it's kind of whited out and highlights the tan and baby blue of the denim-which are beautiful together-I just don't feel tinsel. It reminds me of the silver thread in the tinsel tweed cafe capris in navy-'50s style sofa material. Ugh. too bad. The jacket would also benefit from a tape ribbon finish on the borders (neckline and such) to bring this glitz down to earth a bit.

    1. pathos - Tinsel. Definitely a good descriptive word to throw in for this jacket. I liked the capri in navy tweed. The threading was way more subtle. Finishes? You want finishes for only $398 orig retail? lol

  5. Oh my gosh, Gigi, you crack me up. Linda Richmond! "Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic: The J Crew Lady Jacket in gilded tweed is at once flashy and lacking in interest. Discuss." LOL!

  6. I like the jacket on you, although the sleeves would need shortening. The sparkly factor doesn't bother me. Reminds me of the Honey Tweed Blazer from a couple of years ago.

    1. Rose - It's funny, when they make bracelet sleeves we sometimes want longer ones & vice versa. lol

  7. I'm with Rose, I like it on you if the sleeves could be shortened. And that's what I'm telling myself, I have the Honey Tweed, no need for this one. ;)

  8. I think that the fit and style are very flattering on you. A shiny gold jacket would not work for me but I do believe that you hit the nail on the head with the right customer (I loved Mike Myers in Coffee Talk)!
I have the tweed Dauphine Jacket from a few years ago and it has just a few gold threads running through the brown/black/cream tweed which is plenty for me.
