J Crew - city mini

J Crew's city mini (90289, $89.50) is skirt is currently $39.99 (brilliant blue) & $49.99 (heather graphite & modern red) online & $24.99 in-store. Product notes: Wool with a hint of stretch. Sits above waist. Elastic waistband. On-seam pockets. 17 1/2" long. Lined.

Size 6 - This size was ok. I would've tried an 8 just to compare size & discuss here, but there wasn't one on the rack. This skirt has been $24.99 for a couple weeks now and probably selling well if the stores had them marked accurately. Brights have become neutrals and this blue could be a solid workhorse for even one season. If you can wear this style & find it at the sale price, go for it. As a reminder that may be helpful for length, I'm 5'2".

I'm not in possession of a waist, nor do I know where to procure one. Oh, that's right, Exerciselandia. I would love to visit soon. It just seems so far away.

I personally wouldn't be able to wear this at the moment, even though this summer's drawstring mini (review) worked for me. I think there is a little more material in that skirt, giving it more drape. Plus, I took an 8 in that. Anyway, I saw a wool mini with tights, the Macalister boots and the Collection Martha necklace on a SA and it looked really cute. She wasn't rail thin either and looked really adorable. I see how it can be done tastefully and with the right tones, the skirt won't look so short...

...cuz it's short. I know you're not supposed to bend over at the waist, but I do in the fitting room to get a check of what would happen if I did. Mini G is a runner. I'm often on the chase, preventing her from hurting herself, etc... so I consider that when choosing my attire. Lately I haven't been in many skirts. Or mini skirts. (slaps knee)

The Feeling
I'm not hugging it because I love it. Just holding it to grab the shot I forgot to take while wearing it. I think brilliant blue, specifically, is a great color. I like that it has pockets and it's a lighterweight wool than the felt mini skirt. The fit on the felt mini looks like it would be a 60s mod fit; square on the hips and not much movement. This skirt seemed more fluid. It would be good on cool winter days that are more mild than cold.

Thanks for visiting!

  1. I have that skirt in the gray from this year and black and the bright dahlia from last year. I wear them all the time. I bought a 4 instead of a 2 to gain a little length so I can wear it without worrying about it. Ill have to track down the blue, it's very cute.

  2. I keep seeing this languishing in the sale section, I'll have to give it a try next time in the store. It's cute, but would be strictly work wear since my girl is a runner (and climber) too.

    2. As per usual, I fell for the Crewlade and bought the skirt. It's very cute and will definitely work with tights. I sized up from my pencil skirt size to get more length. The men's section was bursting at my store, I picked up some great gifts.

  3. I have this style in several colors and picked up this same blue last weekend! It was $19.99 + 25% off at my closest local store. Loved the blue!

  4. You're so cute with your try-ons and your writing!!! This color is great--I have a similar skirt from yesteryear--but I am picturing this color blue with the neon rose tee or the bohemian red tee and wanted to share those delicious color images I'm having. Plus add orange shoes--VOILA!

  5. I have a similar skirt from Banana from a couple years ago...and I struggle with it because I always have to tuck in something with it.....the top of this one looks like you'd have to tuck too? I panic when I HAVE to tuck...I don't know why....and then the skirt just goes back in the closet....I need to branch out. Love the color though!

  8. Exerciselandia feels like the North Pole to me and I fear it may too succumb to global warming and disappear altogether... and then where am i gonna go to get my waist back?? Nice read as always Gigi, l-o-l, as they say

  9. I've got this skirt in Modern Red and I really love it. The drape and the softness is what made me choose it over the Felt Mini which, as you mentioned, is heavier and stiffer. I wore it out for my birthday dinner with the Snowcat Boyshirt and the elastic waist is REAL NICE when you want to get your money's worth from a four-course meal.

    1. Never mind. Silly me skipped the top heading. Is black on sale?

Are all the colors above $24.99?

  11. This blue looks fabulous on you!! I would consider this because I can't resist this shade of blue, but I bought the crinkle mini that's similar to this one and I'm not crazy about minis. I only bought the other one because it was red and on sale for a steal.

Girl, I need to join you in exerciselandia because I don't have a waist either and it is not good. That's part of the reason I'm not big on these skirts either because paperbag waist aren't the most flattering.
