Size 6 - I tried it on in-person on 9/26, so it just hit the stores and you should be able to find one if you want red. I was immediately disappointed that it's red/dark grey and not red/black. I guess it's not totally black in the stock pic, but I thought that stupid bright filter they throw on there was washing the top out. I expected the dark checks to be black. Check it out on Ema.
I tried on the size 4 and I do NOT know where those pictures went. I just re-sized them and marked as size 4, did the size 6 pics and the size 4 pics totally disappeared. I did a search on my computer, etc. #iamnotcrazy. Too bad because I wanted to show you the size 4 & size 6, side-by-side. They were pretty similar in size. I liked the 4 everywhere except the stomach, but that's my personal problem. I say if you want a more fitted look, i.e. to tuck into a pencil skirt or other things you'd want a fitted look on top, take the smaller of your numeric sizes. Esp if you have a smaller chest & want the fitted look. If you want a looser feel, closer to the boyfriend style then take the larger of your 2 sizes. It still won't be oversized or baggy, but you'll have more slack in the top and should be able to get a long sleeve henley under.
The Feeling
The weight is very thin, so it's more of an early fall top because I would only want to wear a cardi or vest over it. However, the lighter weight might allow more layers if that's what you need for your cold temps. I wanted to give it a thumbs down because I was disappointed about the black actually being grey or faded black, whatever. But, it felt comfortable on, so it gets a side thumb.Girls buffalo check jacket - Cute! Some of the Crewcuts pieces seem like they'd translate very well as adult gear.
Moving on...
Oxford popover - Size 6 - (94936, $72) - The color is sky blue. Went down to $39.99 online and sold out. I saw some in a couple stores over the weekend and at the same online price of $39.99.
The usual popover fare from J Crew. I just noticed those chest pockets. Since I'm just realizing they're there, I guess they didn't bother me at all. They're not too big, not too little and they don't add any weight.
With the excursion quilted vest (XS). I like how the colors are lighter, but the weight of the fabrics still say fall.
The Feeling
I love this color. The fabric weight is heavy. Almost too heavy because it felt a little stiff. I imagine that would soften with some wear and washing. This is great mom gear. I would do the statement necklace thing or feel fine with no jewelry at all. I like it w/the vest. Could be worn with a hefty cardi.
Chime in...

I saw/tried the buffalo check shirt before it came out online so I wasn't disappointed in the color. I love this shirt and kept trying it on but I kept thinking that I would probably find the same style at Zara for much less. Then one day I was at Zara and saw a similar one that retailed for $74 so I felt "authorized" to buy the JCrew (that I liked better) with the VPS promo. I didn't know that it had sold-out online...
ReplyDeleteEma - I understand the "authorized" feeling. I am Gigi and I approve this message ;)
DeleteThanks Gigi , as always great reviews. I got the black and blue check shirt for my daughter and it is really cute. I tried on for myself, and just like you not much difference in 4 or 6 but me being top heavy felt more comfortable in 6. I got the oxford popover in blue for myself , love it, got size 6 but 4 would be okay too. The Palo Alto store had few of the oxfords left in various sizes if anybody looking for them .
ReplyDeleteMiramar - Thanks for chiming in about fit! And about stock at Palo Alto. :)
DeleteI don't think it sold out - I think they pulled the red off the site. I did a last second order last night (8:59 PST) (promo panic!!) and bought this shirt - they had all sizes available. And as Gigi mentioned - I saw lots in the store this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! I'm not sure that I'll keep it... but kept thinking about it, and this way I can think about it at my house... at the promo price. :)
Mack - Good info about pulling off the website. I forgot they do that. I like to think about things at home, too. I feel ya :)
DeleteI wish that little girls buffalo check jacket came in women's size. It is adorable! Maybe I will try to squeeze into the biggest kids size:) Thanks for the reviews Gigi, bummer about the check shirt being grey and not black. It definitely looks black online. I got a red and black check flannel from Target a couple of years ago that is a very nice weight. Maybe they will bring it back this year.
ReplyDeleteBisc - I think other retailers...someone...will make this in the *right* colors. I think I had one at one point from F21. I should probably check my stock as it may be in there. lol
DeleteI ordered the red buffalo when it first came out. I just didn't like the fabric. Too thin for a flannel. Felt like it would pill. I guess I was hoping for a regular shirt fabric like last years buffalo.
ReplyDeleteSara - If I didn't mention that this is thin, I'm glad you did. You're right. It's way at the other end of the spectrum from the buffalo plaid jacket, which was red and true black.
DeleteSuch great reviews! I have always wondered about the crewcut sizes - like trying a 12 or 14 to wear some of the cute cardigans!
ReplyDeleteSequins&Stilettos
Skylette, if you have a small frame and aren't tall then Crewcuts tops in size 12 or 14 are a definite possibility. Things to consider are necklines, sleeve length (helps if you like bracelet or pushed up sleeves) and shoulder to shoulder measurement. Call for measurements and compare it to a similar adult item.
DeleteSkylette - I have never tried on Crewcuts. Not even when I was 20 lbs lighter. I've heard it works for some ladies. I have been looking at Crewcuts lately since I have a girl. I will probably stick with ON & Gap for most of her things, but it would be nice to work in a few Crewcuts.
DeleteWith Biscuits & Navy in noting that your post would have sold me on the Crewcuts jacket in 12 or 14 (the one advantage of being a fried-egg chest shorty I guess and no tailoring required). But the fabric mix has the rabbit hair so, phew, a pass for me. Thanks, as always, for the deets Gigi!
ReplyDeleteGetFresh - I am looking at fabric content this year, too, and so far staying strong. I hope I don't fold later in the season. Thanks for sharing info on Crewcuts fit.
DeleteI saw the plaid shirt, and while the colour/pattern didn't disappoint (I have learned to curb expectations from seeing too many colours IRL looking nothing like the online pics), the fabric did. Was hoping it would a poplin.
ReplyDeleteCame across the oxford popover on the weekend and bought it in the blue colourway. There was the Beaten Twill popover last year, and I missed out on the blue colour then, happy to find one this season. I've washed it already, and it's nice and soft. Looks great tucked into a skirt or layered under a jacket.
Thanks for the reviews!!
Closet Crisis - Thanks for sharing your oxford popover experience. Our temps are still scorching, but it will be one of the first things I wear when there's a weather shift.
DeleteThe buffalo shirt is definitely off my list now that I've seen the colors in real life. It's not just that the black checks are really grey, the entire shirt just looks faded to me. It also doesn't help that the material is thin.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the reviews, Gigi!
Paula - I was very focused on the black, but agree the overall shirt looks faded. And thin. :( I guess they didn't want to flat out copy the buffalo jacket from Holiday 2010, but this swung too far in the other direction.
