J Crew - sterling skirt in double-serge wool

J Crew's sterling skirt in double-serge wool runs in regular (13543, 00-16) and petite (17528, 00P - 12) sizes and sells for $148. It's available online only. The color choices are black, crimson maple, heather acorn and retro jade. Retro jade is on promo for $118 as of 9/5. Remember promo prices sometimes go up back up to fp before going down again.

Size 4 - waist = 29.125", hips = 38.75", length = 23.625"
Size 6 - waist = 30.125", hips = 39.75", length = 23.875"

Size 6P - waist = 29.125", hips = 38.5", length = 21.625"
Size 8P - waist = 30.125", hips = 39.5", length = 21.875"

Size 6P - This is last year's version, 2011, the first release. I haven't tried this year's version, but I hear the A-line is not as prominent as the previous and the skirt is pretty much a pencil skirt. The A-shape didn't strike me as very strong last year, but the skirt definitely looked different than the no. 2 pencil skirt. A couple notes:
     2011 version - $138, regular size length = 25"
     2012 version - $148, regular size length = 23.5"

Cost cutting. Literally. But an increase in price. Bleaaaagh. Check out the 2012 sterling on AppGal, on JScrewed, on Shop With M and on Tabitha (autumn coral).

I like the pockets on the skirt. According to the date on these pics, I am 2.5 months postpartum. What the hell happened! I looked good. Mini G isn't eating nuggets yet, so I'm not not like I'm finishing my food & hers. lol I hope I get it together soon.

In this pic I don't have it zipped all the way to the top and the skirt poked out as a result. The length is good in the P size. I usually prefer regular length skirts. I recall the fabric being nice.

Here's a comparison of the flair skirt vs the sterling skirt. Could be quite helpful if you already own the flair skirt. I'm trying to look in my closet & winter bins to see what I already own that I don't need dupes of. And getting rid of things that aren't very flattering. Looking at these pics, I'm hoping I don't own the flair skirt. lol The sterling is a much better choice. I carry weight in my stomach and in my rear. My hips are mostly straight, on the sides.

Yesterday I tried on the no. 2 double-serge pencil in retro grade...retro jade and it looked good. Size 4 fit best. I agree w/A JC Closet who mentioned that her pencil size seems to stay the same in the no. 2 and most pencils. Same for me (sz 4 or 6P). I decided to pass on the no. 2 pencil and get this year's sterling in 6P. If the fit is straighter on the sides, closer to a pencil, that won't bother me. I really like the pockets on the sterling & I think they will be more flattering at the middle, cutting it up. It's possible that the pockets might look a smidge more casual than the pencil, with certain tops or sweaters, and that is also fine by me. I am concerned that 21.5" will be too short for my taste, so I may have to go for the regular 4.

Chime in...

  1. That's beautiful on you Gigi, so elegant, I'm looking to forward to hearing what you think about this year's version, though what a bummer that they shortened it too.

    1. Tabitha - Thanks! Hoping this year's looks good, and in retro grade. I didn't realize they shortened it until I went looking for info on last year's version. We must pay even closer attention these days.

  2. So, that's interesting that we're paying MORE this year for the skirt while there is LESS fabric!

Did you notice how the model in this year's Sterling seems to be swimming in her skirt? I think they sized up on her about two sizes so the skirt would hang lower at her waist, seem longer, and look more A-line. Anyways, I saw that and decided that between my usual 4 and 6 skirt size I'd go with the bigger size to get the same effect. Turns out I just fit into the six anyways... it's pretty TTS (not vanity sized). I'm hoping to lose about 10 pounds this fall, and think the skirt will look more and more A-line with each lb. lost! I'm happy with the length of the six too. I'm 5'7" and I think the 4 jade would have been a bit too similar in fit and length to my viridian green pencil from last year, so I'm glad I sized up.

Anyways, that's my 2 cents! Can't wait to see your review!

    1. Elle - I did see how the skirt barely hangs on the model. I never trust the online pics. lol Thanks for sharing fit info :)

  3. This is one of the most flattering skirts that I have seen on you this season. It is really a great cut and so nice that it is elegant and has pockets too.

    1. Awakening my Wardrobe - Thanks! Hoping this year's skirt isn't a bust.

  4. Someone on JCA posted the difference between the sweep (width at hem) in this year's and last year's Sterling skirts. I can't remember the number, but it was large, something like four to six inches narrower this year, making it only about six or seven inches wider than the pencil skirt. What is the point? Why make an "A-line skirt" that doesn't look any different than a pencil skirt. I "need" (OK, that is sort of true) a camel skirt, and I was considering the Sterling as an alternative to this year's cheapened pencil skirt, but I'm going to have to see several more reviews before I purchase. Thanks for posting.

    1. Hexicon - You're right. I recall seeing those measurements. I'll have to search JCA if I get time. Even if this turns out to fit more like the pencil skirt, I'm thinking I'll like the pockets. We'll see...

  5. First...you look great. Now AND back then!

I love the Sterling skirt, was definitely in the camp of adoring fans last year. Was disapointed to hear about the changes, but I'm still intrigued. Looking forward to your review of the new skirt!!

    1. Kelley - Aw, thanks. I must've been hormonal. I don't know why I didn't keep the sterling last year. I'll post pics of the retro jade when I receive it. I'm West Coast, so I won't get it for a week.

  6. I bought the 8P in last year's carbon Sterling Skirt. This year I ordered the Crimson in 6 and the skirt fit the same as last year's petite size in the length, waist and hem sweep. If you liked last year's petite, Gigi, I would suggest sizing up to the regular this year.

I also ordered the no 2 pencil in the Crimson and on me the pencil and Sterling skirts looked very different. The pencil won for me as I felt the Sterling looked dowdy and was a lot more aline on my figure.

  7. You look lovely in these. I would have ordered one already if it weren't for the smaller size and "sweep", but maybe if I size up one regular size. I'll await your review. I am taller so disappointed in the shorter length.

    1. Lane - Above, Elle mentions that she's 5'7" and likes the length. I don't know how tall you are. Based on other comments, it sounds like those of us on the size fence should take the larger of our sizes. Will be posting this year's version when it arrives.

  9. The sterling is very flattering on you. Nice staple to have in your wardrobe. Glad I'm not the only one who hasn't noticed the increase in prices and decrease in quality/fabrics. OT, but I tried the schoolboy blazer on in store the other day and it really seems like they have cut corners on fabric and fit compared to seasons past versions.

    1. bisc - Ok, I though this year's wool schoolboy is a little tighter, but I figured it was me. Next thing you know they'll be trying to sell us short sleeve blazers in the winter. lol Thanks for chiming in.

  10. I was all stoked to buy this year's version in one of the colors as the one from last year fits me so very well (perfection for my 12 inch difference between waist and hips). Then it all came to a screeching halt. Sigh. :) I will just wear the heck out of my heather acorn version and continue to wear my colorful pencil skirts, even if, in reality, they don't really truly work with my body shape (I just wear them a bit lower on my frame instead of at my waist).

And I agree with everyone else, you look good. Take it from me, if you nurse your baby, it takes a LONG time to lose the last few pounds. It would take a famine to lose that weight. I only lost my last few pounds with my babies when I went down to nursing two or three times a day (which for me is around 1 year and 2 months). Hope that helps, even a little bit...

  11. Oh, and I am going to see if Boden carries a wool a-line skirt that is simple, not embellished. If so, I will make sure to mention it when I do an outfit of the day post wearing the sterling skirt. They do a lot of a-line shapes, but usually are too twee and patterned for a conservative office.
