Bailey 44's tiered stripes dress vs. Macy's Cha Cha Vente dress
...but noooow I have irl pics to share. On the left is the Bailey 44 dress in orange, obvi. I tried it on 2 months ago. At the time I thought the M was a good fit. Even though my body hasn't changed much -- in fact, my stomach might be bigger -- I would go for a size S instead. The price is high on Bailey 44 dresses, but the fabrication and way the dresses hug your body make it seem worth it. I can't say for sure they're worth the price because I haven't owned/worn/washed one.
On the right is the Cha Cha Vente look alike available at Macy's. It's $68 and on sale for $54.99 thru 1/12. You can click right on the site to see available coupons. And you're a cardholder, your rewards coupon work on this brand. The fabric is thinner on this dress than the Bailey 44. However, it didn't feel totally cheapie, trashy thin, whatever that means to you. Lightweight is a good way to describe it. However, I can't say I have confidence it will last more than a couple of washes. On the other hand, I would expect the Bailey 44 to hold up well given the fabric and, of course, the price. It's very, very comfortable and felt good on the body. I wouldn't say this is a trendy item because I do feel that stripes are always in style. Also, a well fitting dress is always in style. However, I can't say that I would want to wear it for more than a couple seasons. So if the Bailey 44 is out of your price range, definitely consider this one. Thumbs up for a good knock off. Oh, I'm 5'2" and 130+.
ETA: After posting, I remembered I had this photo to share as well. I put some text onto the pic, in an attempt to show how the edging is uneven. I noticed it a little bit from afar in the mirror. However, it was only in one or two places and I don't think it's something a non-clothes horse would even notice. The issue is that some of the stripes veer off of the edge of the material. They didn't take care to ensure that each stripe is complete all the way to the seam. Some of the stripes seem to fall off and that's because of the way the material is cut. This may not make sense as you read it and the pic may not help. It's something you might only notice upon close examination, in person. It didn't bother me enough to dislike the dress. I still think it's a great knockoff.
To answer my own question that I posted below. I think this is a dress that I would only wear a few times. One thing about cheap clothes is you hope they don't fall apart while you're wearing them. I think this would hold up and not fail while I'm out. I see winterizing it once or twice in the next couple of months. Then wearing it a couple times in the spring. I would like consider the concept/silhouette a forever keeper dress, but I'm sure my attention will be grabbed by the next new thing and I would be over this one. So, the cheaper version is just fine for me. Check it out on Ginger Girl.
Also from Bailey 44
layered column ($178)
pieced column ($178)
How do you feel about choices like this? Do you go w/the cheaper version, pay for the more expensive one or pass on both if the expensive one is out of reach?
Chime in...

Gigi - you look mahvelous in the knock-off version! If I could whistle I would. ;)
ReplyDeleteWow, that Macy's dress looks great on you! I love it.
ReplyDeleteFor me it's not about price, it's about fit and quality. If I love it, it fills a hole in my wardrobe, it looks amazing on me and I know I can wear it multiple times (high use value), then I will buy it. After much trial and error with my wardrobe, this is now how I prefer to shop.
I like the Macy's version on better with you! So much so I just ordered it! I've wanted the Bailey one since it came out but can't justify the $. $55 I can work with!
ReplyDeleteDang, lady, you look fantastic in that dress! I like the Macys one much better anyways, because the length is much more flattering. Great find!
ReplyDeleteI like the Macy's one - the sleeves, bust, and length seem to fit much better. BTW, I'm loving the orange shoes you're wearing with the Anthro dress. Would you mind sharing the brand / style? Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteYou look phenomenal!!! Totally hawt!! I agree the Macy's one is more flattering on you.
ReplyDeleteHaha, what I wil buy all depends. Normally I'm with desert flower but postpartum (I hate that word can't they find something better?!) I'm kind for stingy with what I will buy to fit my changing shape.
Oh, thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I have been dying over that dress since I tried it on months ago, and loving every version they pumped out since, but I could NOT pay that much money for what it was. I just ordered the Macy's version, and a shirt, and even with shipping, taxes and duty (I'm in Canada) I still saved over $130. THANK YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else, the Macy's one looks fabulous on you! For me it's not so much about the brands (although my closet might say otherwise), if you find something thats this similar, the price is right, and it fits you great, I say go for it! It might last longer if you hang dry it instead of putting it in the dryer, and if you wear it a couple times between washes. I tend to do that a lot!
ReplyDeleteThe Macy's version looks great on you Gigi! Personally I choose based on materials -- so if the less expensive option is made of materials that won't fall apart after a few washings then of course I go for that. But if it's made cheaply then I would rather spend more and have the item longer.
ReplyDeleteYou look fab in that Macy's dress Gigi! Hotness. Great lookalike! I think I pretty much judge between price and long-term wearability. I'm trying to stay away from throwaways as much as possible these days! ;) This one looks really good though.
ReplyDeleteThe Macy's dress is absolutely fabulous on you. I'm going to hop on over to macys.com right now. :)
ReplyDeletetiffany rose - I heard the whistle shrill. *lol*
ReplyDeleteDesert Flower - I definitely still consider the cost/wear when buying. Even on the cheap things. Otherwise, a $55 dress can be expensive if it's of cheap material and only worn once.
Pamela - It's very interesting to see the dresses side-by-side. I'm glad I did that. The Bailey 44 is superior in material, but the fit is better for me in the Macy's version. Hope it works well for you :)
FashionAddict - Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSewPetiteGal - The shoes are J Crew's Juliet midheel pumps. You can sometimes find them on Ebay. They're from 2008. these shoes are similar in color, but with a pointier toe.
mommydearest - Thank you. Isn't it amazing what draping will do? Y, the word postpartum sucks. It even sounds depressing. Saw your tip on ShopWithM's blog about ON price adjustments within 14 days. That is some news. Thanks for sharing!
Tracy - You're welcome. Hope it's smashing on you :). I totally believe it can be winterized. I don't know how cold your climate is right now, but keep that in mind when you feel the material.
Jennifer - I haven't looked at the care instructions, but regardless I would air dry as you stated :)
roxy - Roxy!! Good to see you. Happy New Year, if I didn't already drop by Grand Central Anthro to say so ;)
shopwithm - I have a good share of throwaways as well. I have to say that some have lasted longer than expected.
sparrowsandsparkles - Good to see you. You'd look great in either version. :)
...for those following comments -- I added another pic to the post and more info about the knock off dress.
ReplyDeleteNice review, Gigi! I actually like the knockoff version on you more -- it really hugs your curves more, though you did mention that maybe going to a size S in the Anthro version could've evened things out. The length on the Macys version is really swell, too!
ReplyDeletesha-wing!! Thats one swell knock-off, and rather tempting. You look very fetching in both! I have had my eye on the layered column dress for sooooooo long, and with a christmas GC...well...
