J Crew - velvet Eden blazer

J Crew's velvet Eden blazer (17306) retails for $148. It comes in regular, petite & tall. The colors are black, darkest indigo, harbor gray, copper (orange rust-ish), dark blossom, iris (deep purple). It rings up as Velvet Ali Jacket on the receipt.

Dark blossom

Size 2 - harbor gray - The grey looked cheapie on me. It may not look the same on someone else. I do think that it will show signs of wear in the velvet in the lighter colors more than darker colors.

Size 2 - black - loveth - I don't know what it is. Perhaps me loveth something when I fully expect to dislike it. I really, really thought this would be too feminine on me. I actually love the shirring at the pockets. And the shirring at the back waist did not add weight or a duck tail on me.

So chic - I am going to order the 4P. The fit is good on the 2, but the sleeves are too long.

Check out Ema in dark blossom...

, Audrey Bella, on AppGal here and here, and on Dina. And on Cari.

There has been discussion about whether this is a Bella equivalent. I'd say no. This has a shawl collar and you can't pop it. Also, the velvet on the Bella was nicer. That jacket was from 2 years ago at least and JCrew quality has taken a hit since. All that said, me likey!

p.s. 7/30 - I ordered the 2P. Here are a few measurements as follows:

0P = bust 33.75
2P = bust 34.75, waist 30.75, sleeve 29.875
2 = bust 35.25, waist 31.50, sleeve 31.75

10/6/09 ETA -- I ended up getting the 4P - I am wearing the fleur de lis tee, an Oct 09 release.

  1. Too feminine? TOO FEMININE?! Lady, there's no such thing.

    There is such a thing as too much velvet, though. I love the jacket in the black, but I have a hard time wearing velvet in any other color. I always feel like a bad pimp from the late 1970's, or something. *sighs*

  2. I tried on the navy color at my B&M and must say it fit true to size and liked the detailing...but not so sure about the shawl collar. I also agree with Chloe, I have a hard time wearing velvet so I'll pass on this jacket. It is a cute jacket, though I may consider if it was on sale. :)

  3. Chloe, I agree with you about the velvet colors - last year my PS tried to sell me on a purple velvet Ecole with a Victoria cami underneath, which was just so not me... I felt like Prince (except you know, without the 24" waist)!

  4. There is something about the pleats on the side that is a turn off for me. The black jacket looks cute on you.

    O/T Have you see the twisted slub cotton tees in the stores Gigi? Are they sheer? From the pic on-line they look sheer. I read a review on one just wondering what you opinion is.

    Shopping on line is such a crapshoot when you don't live near a J Crew store.

  5. Gigi, thank you for the shoutout. The grey looks definitively better on you than on me, but you look great in the black.

    casual-crew, the white is a little bit sheer, but not the sandalwood, hope it helps.

  6. I am laughing out loud at Silver_lining's post. THAT is exactly what I think of with velvet. And while I just adore it on everyone else, I am not comfortable wearing it myself. But like I do every year, I'll try a velvet jacket on thinking this time it may be different. I like the black on Gigi. And you look so good in those pictures!!!

  7. Ha I was laughing at "too feminine" too! Most of your clothing choices ARE feminine silly girl! That's a good thing! :)

    That being said, it's so funny you posted about this velvet jacket because I just got my JCrew catalogue and this was the item that I really want...in the iris color. I can't believe how much you were swimming in the size 2! Girl you are TINY!

  8. I am laughing right along with Pam at silver_lining's post - it can be so Prince in the 80's. But I do love the black velvet on you, Gigi - looks fantastic! How tiny your waist looks, too!

  9. Oh I love the black on you! I love my Bella from last year though...

  10. Pentagon City has the Edens and they are gorgeous! The Dark Blossom is a beautiful color and is exactly how it appears in the catalog (which I finally just got-yay!) I acually liked the Harbor Grey color a lot on me. It looked kind of elegant against my paler complexion. The Indigo was pretty too. This is a great little jacket and not super-pricey!

  11. I got mine yesterday, and unfortunately it doesn't work for me. But the black jacket looks good on you, Gigi. Lucky you!

  12. LOL silver_lining. I bought the Ecole in Dark Navy or whatever color it was from last year for next to nothing. I honestly thought I wouldn't wear it but it ended up being one of my favorite pieces from last Fall. I don't know that I would do the Eden blazer b/c I have the Ecole and I think one velvet jacket is enough. I do love the black on you!I think we will be seeing this in FS, esp. some of the other colors.

  13. I'm so glad you did a post on this blazer! The more I stare at pictures of it online the more I love it. I think I'm going to buy the dusty rose one this weekend...it's such a great fall piece and I know I'll wear it a ton. I really love the black on you! I tried that one on but it was just too harsh for my pale pale PALE skin :)

  14. I had the Bella in blue, but I felt like Austin Powers every time I wore it, so I sold it on eBay.

  15. I love this jacket. It was the only must have for me. I tried on the blossom and blue. The colors is so DIFFERENT than online or catalog in person IMO. I bought deep blue--it was the color that I thought would wear well and not scream neutrals from fall 2009. I hope yours comes soon! :)

  16. I had the chance to try the Eden on when I was in J.Crew on Monday and think it's really cute on. I may end up with one if they're still around in my size on sale, but I can't justify buying one now at full price when it's in the 90's. I really like the Black one on you, Gigi! :) Btw, the grey tee you have in the last pic in the post is the one I ended up getting. Did you get it, too?

  17. It does look fab in the black! It even seems to fit you better...I thought it was a smaller size at first!

  18. love it on you in black. i love it in dark blossom and wish they could transfer this color to the libretto necklace and duchess bracelet, then I would finally be happy with something from the august rollouts. yes, i am still pouting

  19. casual-crew; I tried on the twisted slub cotton tee in the pink color and it was not see through.

    I like both colors on you. While I thought the jacket looked good on me, there was something about it - maybe too much detailing for me. Plus, even when I sized up it was constricting around the shoulders - wish I didn't have broad shoulders. :)

  20. Thank-you math teacher and Ema for your help.

  21. Definitely the black blazer looks better on you. Do you know if they run it in petit?

  22. I am still debating this blazer. I played around with it today at the store but I just don't know... I'm just not sure it's a piece I will keep forever and maybe I'll buy the school boy or another instead. I like the black on you!

  23. This is one awesome jacket. Just bought a second color today:) It costs about the same as three of JCrew's tee and I don't need anoher tee!!!! I really like the detail on this one!

  24. Pink. Love. Swoon.

    I have never worn velvet in the past because of the [aforementioned] Prince and also funeral parlour curtain associations. But these light cute colours and that lik' side ruffle just might convert me...

  25. I tried the black the other day in store and really liked it. I was thinking of ordering it with the 20% off. The 0 looked good but the sleeves were long. Do you think I should get a 0P? Or a 2P? TIA?

  26. I just had to pipe in b/c I bought this on Final Sale, 30% off in store. I got the DARK SLATE in size 4. I am in LOVE. It can truly be dressed up or down - looking forward to wearing this with graphic tees and jeans AND to work. It is SO comfortable, and I am hard to please with blazer - I'm slender but a bit wider thru the shoulders, so blazers almost always pull on me.
