J Crew - ringspun ruffle short-sleeve painter henley

J Crew's ringspun ruffle short-sleeve painter henley (12678) retails for $34.50. It comes in many colors -- navy, white, crisp celery, shell (pale pink), sweet cantaloupe, pewter, aqua green, sweet lemon and light chartreuse.

Pewter - I love how it looks online, but it didn't sway me in-person. I think it might look cute w/a long necklace and the mahali-dot cafe capris (11970). I tried those on btw, and wasn't a fan. Print pants aren't for me.

Tea rose

Size S - I don't like J Crew's uber thin knits. In some, my skin shows through and changes the color of the item. My skin is cool. Some of their knits not so much.

I don't see this color online.

I wanted to likey, but didn't. It's simply too thin and felt floppy. And it's too long for me. I think it's an option for a great layer underneath something else, but I didn't see wearing it on its own without a tank underneath -- boo -- or booby bumpers to cover the nips. That means each time I wanted to wear the top, it would cost me $2 for a pair of the bumpers.

I passed. Unless on super sale because it could work well underneath a short sleeve cardi.

You can also see it here on Lizpoms.

Likey? No likey?
Chime in...

  1. I saw this online and was wondering if it would work well with a cami or tank layered underneath. It's very pretty - I love the ruffle.

  2. I likey and I likey on your especially the pink one. I know what you mean about layering. I would consider it because the ruffles are so darn cute

  3. I *really* like the pink one on you!

i love this one. i ordered it online in white, grey and navy - not sure which one(s) i want to keep (might keep them all but that's kinda weird isn't it?). at first i was really disapointed that you *have* to wear a cami underneath because of the loop/buttons. even when buttoned if you move the ruffle you can see everything underneath so you need that cami! BUT, with a cami i really like it. for some reason the ruffle on my grey one is floppier than the others. OK, sorry i wrote an essay here...i just drank my coffee. ;p

  4. I like this alot too, although I'm not a fan of the ringspun painters. They seem to grow and snag easily. I would get these on sale though. :)

  5. I definitely WANT to like it but for some reason the ruffle in the middle looks a bit awkward don't you think? Hmm I'll have to try it on myself before I really knock it down. Thanks for the mini review!

  6. This did not work for me at all, I ordered the tea rose it when it first came out, I sent it back. For one it was very close fitting and it showed my bra. I also found the quality poor, the distressed look on the ruffles I feel would not hold up to multiple washings.

  8. I can't remember whose boyfriend said that ruffle looked like a snake, and now everytime I see this shirt that's what I see.

  9. I love that green...so fun and bright...but that shirt, eh...

Too bad for you, because that green looked fantastic with your coloring. Maybe J. Crew can put these awesome colors on something we would actually wear? Hmm, J. Crew?

I love my Mahali Dot Capris, but I can understand why people don't like printed pants. It is a bit much...but at least this print is a bit smaller...

  10. HeidiG - You could totally wear this and the green might look really good on you. Looking forward to a report on the DC/JCA experience!

shopaholicdiva1027 - My closet is -- forgive me -- puking ruffles right now. I need to slow it down.

ccbmum - I think it's cute w/a cami underneath, but I didn't want to have to wear something under or over it. Also, I had a couple of ringspun items tear within the first few hours of wear. It's off my list unless I am on Crewlade and forget about the type of material. *

IRL - Hey there. Totally agree about the ringspun fabric. Very questionable.

ashley - I saw it on my PS and had to try it on. It was much cuter on her. There are enough other ruffle items to choose from.

casual-crew - This is the fabric that inspires my husband to ask if it is an item I bought at a thrift store. Now you know that's bad.

starla729 - Yep. Way too thin. Though I will laugh if I end up w/one from $9.99 FS or something.

Joyce - *lol* that is funny

dinagideon - Yeah, the green is great. I'd definitely try it in another item. I couldn't remember who liked the mahali dot. It was you! Thanks for the reminder. I gave my brain a break from trying to file for the info.

  11. I don't really care for this one, but the Store Director at my J.Crew said they were *flying* out the door...I will probably try it on eventually to see why exactly that is. Thanks for the pics! :)

  12. FFM - I think $34.50 is an attractive price point to ppl since the top has ruffles. I could see younger girls (I.e. teens) really liking this one and being able to wear it solo w/out a cami.

  13. It's cute...but if the fabric is too thin me no likey. Like the price though!

  14. LOL, I am nowhere near a teen but I love this top anyway! I am thinking of sewing 3/4 of the front placket closed so that my bra doesn't show when the ruffles fly open. I just like it so much better than a plain old crewneck tee. :)

  15. petunia: haha. that's exactly what i was thinking of doing eventually (sewing the placket)!! :) i think that's why i haven't returned mine...i need tops other than plain ol' t's (which i have plenty of) and i don't want a classic polo either. :)

gigi: *lol* i'm definitely on the crewlade...it happens to me every spring!...*smiles*.

  16. JL - It's very thin, unfortunately.

Petunia - I'm thinking teen, thin, no juicy rolls. I defintitely don't think it's juvenile. You have a great thin figure & would look good in. The thin material bugs, but yes, definitely way more stylish than a plain tee.

ccbmum - I would also prefer this over a plain tee or polo. I like polos but they're just not me. I saw this again today in grey and it was so cute. I kept telling myself "it's thin, it's thin, don't touch." :-)

  17. I liked the yellows they have this month so I first got the henley in a chartreuse but the fit was a little snug so i upgraded to a small in a sweet lemon... I agree the material is sheer bu im a layering person and completely a ruffleholic so I love it do you guys think the sweet lemon is too bright a yellow... I have really dark brown skin..

  18. Anon@4:58 PM - Dear pretty brown girl...it's a 'do.' Work the sweet lemon w/your coloring. I have sour lemon and it's supposed to not be in my good range of colors at all, but I love it.
