J Crew - charmeuse pencil skirt

J Crew's charmeuse pencil skirt (11652) retails for $98. It's been on promo for $69.50 The skirt comes in pewter, fresh orange and bronzed twig. Regular, numeric sizes only; no P or T. 100% silk & 100% silk lining.

Use EXTRA30 through 4/2 for a net price of $48.65 online.

I tried it on awhile ago. I believe this is a size 4. I thought it was a bit dowdy, but I loooved the way it felt. I have a habit of having lunch & then trying on clothes. Not the best idea in the world, but that's been my pattern.

Another shot of the dowdiness.

I tried it on the other day and decided to give fresh orange a whirl in size 2. This time I have pumps on which helps w/the look & fit.

Add belt...cardi...glaydie, you know the thrill.

Me loveth! I used the EXTRA30 and am so looking forward to receiving this. It's so bright & pretty in person. I think I'll be really happy with this and will get more use than it appears out of the color. Yes, glaydies, I will get it hemmed a bit. ;-)

Lexiloo mentioned it on JCA as follows:

"I got the Charmeuse pencil skirt in bronzed twig about a month back (when it was still $98 online, but already marked down to $69 in store), and I love it! It feels great and I can imagine wearing this for fun or for work especially in the summer since it's so light. However, to be fair, I'm like a lot of the JCrew models-- not at all hippy, very stright & slim. It might hug a curvy woman's figure a little too much. Also, the length is exactly as it looks on the website: that is, I'm nearly 6' tall, and the skirt hits me close to my knees. Shorter ladies might be concerned about this. The elastic waist concerned me too, but I tried this on in the store with the fish shirt (stores only) and it covered the waist. And that looked good. However, I also tried it on recently with my orange Quinn cami, tucked it, and I loved it. So I really don't think the waist should concern you."

I agree with everything Lexiloo said.

Likey? No likey?
Chime in...

Ok...so I had to try it on again in the bronzed twig. This time I tried a size 2.

For those with 20/20+ .... that's J Crew's ruffle neck henley from last fall, the crystal pillow necklace and the Serengetis. I almost walked out in the skirt. After paying, of course. But I didn't want to freak my husband out by coming home in something new. It would've been weird.

I love this skirt (!) and don't need a silver one. So I had to see if this color would work for me. It's at the b&ms for $59.99 before the 25% card.

  1. I really love this in the orange on you, it looks like a delicious tangerine! Also agree that many, many colors will go with it... and will be great for warm weather, easy to dress-up with a button-up or dress down with a tank. Very versatile. Good work!

  2. oohh... thanks for posting my review, gigi!

i think this issue with the color is based on skin tone. i mean, you noticed how JCrew put Vanessa in the orange ans Liya in the bronze, right?

so, yeah, the bronzed twig does nothing for you, but that orange... wow! you make that scary bright color (for me at least) look amazing.

i agree with the pumps idea. i tried mine on with sandals like in the catalogs, but i think that it looks so much better with heels.

  4. Love the orange on you, Gigi! :) I have bought too many pencil skirts this season, so I won't pick this one up, but it looks great on you!

  5. I forgot to mention that I have hips & I don't think I'll have any problems rocking this skirt(pencil skirts look great on women w/ curves ... I own lots of them) ... as far as it being too long for petite women ... pull the skirt a little higher!

  11. I got that skirt in twig (and a coordinating scarf) at the JCA event on Sunday. I adore it. I love the twig with my brown skin. I had to go down a size from my regular size (and 2 sizes from my pencil skirt size) and I am bootylicious, so it will definjitely make the curvy girls happy.

  12. Goodness, JCrew is cranking out a lot of orange skirts this season. I love them ALL and am having trouble deciding which one(s) to get. :)

Gigi, can you comment further on the charmeuse skirt, please? I haven't seen this one in my local store, so would appreciate any additional input you can share.

I'm wondering if the charmeuse is of a decent weight with a nice drape? Also, does the elastic waist band sit well on the waist and lie flat? The garment measurements seems to indicate that this skirt is cut a bit more generously than the other pencil skirts (a size bigger), would you recommend sizing down? Also, is this a skirt that can be shortened 2-3 inches without obscuring up its pencil silhouette? And lastly, how is the view from the back? The backside view on the website looks a bit...pillowy? I'm not sure what to make of it.

The skirt looks great on you, BTW. Thanks so much for featuring it on your blog!

lexieloo - Thanks for the detailed info. That was great.

birdie butter - I almost got 2 and said...girl, you are being ridiculous. I recently got the sharkskin skirt on FS in silver so I don't need the pencil skirt in silver. (Still convincing myself) Thanks for your feedback for those w/rounder hips.

JTS - Thank you. I am trying to work my way towards more skirts. I think I've gotten too comfortable with jeans and skirts are more flattering.

    shopaholicdiva1027 - Thanks, gladyie :-)

HeidiG & KatyO. - Thank you. I am looking forward to its arrrival.

    dinagideon - You're right.

SanFranciscoCA - You are super sweet. I am going to pass. I haven't been to Express in years. Plus I've been hopped up on Crewlade.

Far - *lol* Go girl. Werk it, werk it. Love the feedback. Thanks a lot!

Anon/LL - This skirt is a decent weight. Not flimsy at all. At the same time, it feels lightweight and flowy. The elastic fits great on the waist and you know the skirt is not going to get twisted while you wear it, which is great. It also will lay flat underneath a tee.

Lexieloo said she tried it w/the fish tee and I agree that tees work with it. I like a size 4 in the pencil skirts and I looked and felt so much better in the 2. I'm wearing a 4 in the bronzed twig and the fresh orange is a size 2. So yes, there is a chance you need to size down one. Go by the measurements, not what you typically take.

I felt that the back of the skirt felt straight. Didn't grab the booty or anything. I was able to pull it up to make it shorter. That worked. I was also able to wear it lower below the belly button, but if I choose to wear it predominately (sp) that way I will get it hemmed. I prefer the lower waist fit so I'm sure it will go to the tailor.

It's a nice straight cut and doesn't taper in a bunch at the hem if I recall correctly. So when it gets hemmed, there shouldn't be a line to the skirt that can get screwed up or would need adjusting. I think a straight hem will be fine w/out addtl work.

Good questions. I wish I could be this specific on every review. I focus more on IRL pics otherwise I'd be here all day. If you ever have questions, definitely ask and I will elaborate as best as I can. HTH! :-)

  15. Anon/LL - You're welcome and I'm glad you visit often. Thank *you*

I just realized I meant to say that 'the back of the skirt FELL straight' -- not 'felt' straight. It falls straight down, no extra poofiness or material.

  16. Hi Gigi, sorry I'm a little bit late on this but I wanted to comment. I have seen this skirt in the stores many times but never gave it much of a thought. Plus I thought that they would have tons on sale.
Now that I see it on you I have changed my mind. You look fab with the orange! I think that the kakhi color would work better on me though. Too bad that I never tried it on, I cannot order with the EXTRA30 :-(. What a great piece for the price, congratulations and thanks for sharing!

  20. Carrie - I am in love with. It's just a tad too cold to wear it right now. I want to wear it more casually, so I can't wait for warmer weather.
