J Crew's boucle' wool scarf coat (10292, 10993 for petite, $350) loomed so bright and so large in size from the rack that I was going to ignore it.

I thought it might be really obnoxious, but I decided to try it on for the blog. I didn't recall seeing this online and my instinct was to tie it like so...

Notice how big the cuff is. I am usually a 4 or 6P. This is a size 2. I would probably order a 4P. I wonder if the cuff is a bit smaller in the 4P. I realize that's the look of the jacket. However, if I purchased this I would consider having it tailored to be a bit smaller.

I would not wear it like this. You might be able to fold one scarf side over the other and pin it with a brooch. That could look cute. However, imo the scarf really begs to be draped in some way around or at the neck.

I was told by an SA it came in golden cypress online, which I do not see. I only see the bright berry as an option. Very cute, very comfortable and cozy. They got this boucle' right, unlike the boucle' on the Penny.
ETA: This is a lighterweight coat. It's definitely meant to be layered or worn on a cool fall/spring day. It's lined, but would not help you one bit in super cold weather.
J Crew -- If you're listening, please tell your phone reps how to properly pronounce boucle' as it is not pron. "bookle."

I liked this online but not IRL. Thanks so much for the pictures and review. I can cross this one off my list!
ReplyDeleteit IS cute on, but, a bit too bulky for me; I bought the Astrid charcoal w/ droopy flower yesterday, think I shoulda got the size 4, but ordered the 6, will see. It looked so cute w/ jeans (in the berry, not charcoal in the stores). I told the sa that the penny had a strange huge fit, she agreed. ALso, the quinn cami fit huge, think JC needs to make a XXS, not for me, but, just for others.
ReplyDeletei love this coat! i want to really like the astrid w/droopy flower and other adtrids, but they just seem to boxy to me. because this coat is longer, i like it a lot better!
ReplyDeleteGreat revew, Gigi. Thank you! I've seen this coat at the store and found it light-weight, more like a very heavy jacket than a northeasternly coat. :) I really like it though and love the bright berry color but don't think it's worth $350.
ReplyDeleteanon@3:29 - You're welcome. Glad I can help.
ReplyDeletecaliglam - I think the sleeves are bulky on this one, but it's not a heavyweight jacket so it was very comfortable. I'm curious to see if it will come in other colors. It's a bit voluminous for a small person so petite is the way to go.
I ordered the charcoal Astrid yesterday. Thanks for your sizing comments on J Crew Aficionada! It really helped as I was trying on the bright berry in the fitting room. I decided on a 6 when I went on the red phone to order it in charcoal. As far as XXS, it sounds like J Crew needs to consider the size. Banana Republic makes an XXSP, but I don't think they do a XS. They don't do vanity sizing though, imo, unless they've changed things.
anon@6:11a - I got the Astrid, but don't plan on wearing the droopy flower. It's definitely boxier and more of a fitted blazer. This is a true jacket/coat. It's very comfortable on.
cleo26 - Hi :-). It's definitely lighterweight. I should have mentioned that. It may be a collection piece, hence the $350 price tag. I didn't spend a lot of time with it to note any special lining details on the interior, etc...but I'm sure it has some. The boucle' is definitely nice on it.
Bookle!!! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteGigi, I tried this coat on today based on your review. :) The first time i saw it, I had only touched it on the rack. For me, i found the sleeves just a tad too short in my "usual" size 2, and the bust area was tight. The shoulders, for a change, were OK. I guess i would have to size up. Overall, I really liked the color and feel of this jacket even though I wasn't sure how to tie the scarf. :) I would seriously consider buying this jacket if it were on sale for the right price.
ReplyDeleteanon @ 10:51 - I have had 3 reps pronounce it bookle. It cracks me up.
ReplyDeletecleo26 - I would also consider this if it were on sale. I think there are a couple of options w/the scarf. It's cute how they have it in the online pic. I would be very curious about other colors. We'll see...
Just bought on final sale and I am pleased. I plan to wear it more like a blazer with black and white herringbone skirt and black and white woven skirt and pants. I'll be wearing these with my new black Beckett boots for a retro-'80s feel.
ReplyDeleteAny other pairing suggestions are welcome!
Saved the picture from the catalog so I knew the best way to tie the scarf part but I also plan to attack that area with some cool brooches.
eek. cute online, not in real life! maybe better looking on a bigger person?
